>> these have two 100-foot length of hose on them. >> reporter: he says he knows what's ahead. >> a lot of work basically, we know obviously coming into fire so son that we'll be busy and be working more, you know, extended days on big fires. >> reporter: already, several significant wildfires have broken out around the state including this 300-acre fire in riverside county. in response, cal fire is hiring its seasonal firefighters about 3 weeks early. in santa clara county in the east bay, 42 seasonal firefighters will start work on monday with another 30 following one week later, 50 seasonal firefighters will start monday in sonoma county and the north bay, and the peninsula will see 30 seasonal firefighters starting next month. >> so the week that they come in, they go back through basic safety training, hose lays, hand tool management and physical fitness training. >> reporter: cal fire's battalion chief says staffing up early means a full complement of crews will be availability if the predictions of an early fire season come

through. >> most years we're not fully staffed until july 1. >> reporter: so this is early. >> due to the lack of rain, fuel moisture is very low, very dry. >> reporter: we can certainly see that here in morgan hill. this is a live picture looking down at the valley. by the time that cal fire fully staffs up statewide, elizabeth, they will have 12,000 firefighters on duty and about a third of those will be those inmate work crews that you sometimes see out on the firelines. >> best to be prepared. but marks, i'm curious, just -- but mark, i'm curious, just how bad have the numbers been for wildfires? >> reporter: wildfires season hasn't started yet and caltrans has already responded to 680 wildfires. they say that's 200 more than normal this same time in any year and that's why they are going with early staffing. >> all right. mark sayre, thank you. fans of a historic bike shop in downtown san jose are crushed to hear that the building might be a total loss

after last night's fire. the century old victorian building near the 102 on-ramp caught fire about 9:30 p.m. today city inspectors cleared the way to dig through the rubble and start looking for a cause. the building was home of faber cyclery for 90 years. and part of many locals' memories. >> i'm not going to be able to come here and get my little knickknacks, all the old friends i have met here through the years, i'm not going to meet them here anymore. >> this is quite an ending to it -- to the history of this shop. it's incredible. >> investigators are looking into reports there may have been squatters in the building. in other bay area headlines, these are the charred remains of portable buildings at a san leandro elementary school. fire ripped through all six units early this morning on james madison elementary's campus. officials suspect arson since the units were only a day olds and weren't even hooked up to

utilities yet. no one was hurt. classes went on as normal today. speed may have been a factor in a deadly crash this morning near alamo. a man was killed when his car veered into a telephone pole. it happened on stone valley road near roundhill. chp says the man's car hit the pole and then it overturned. both directions of stone valley road were temporarily closed while pg&e repaired the 45-foot power pole. congress is on vacation again. but before they left, lawmakers made sure that they wouldn't be late getting home. cbs reporter danielle nottingham on the deal putting air traffic controllers back in the tower. >> reporter: lawmakers left capitol hill for a week-long break. many headed to the airport just minutes after passing a bill that is expected to end the flight delays seen this week. the measure allows the transportation department to move about $250 million within the agency and put air traffic controllers back on the job full time. >> the bill is passed.

>> reporter: it flew through congress with bipartisan support. >> i have been against the sequester. >> reporter: but democrats and republicans continue to blame each other for the across-the- board budget cuts that led to controller cutbacks in the first place. >> we're here today because this administration has decided to put politics over passengers. >> speaker boehner said the sequestration bill included 98% of what republicans wanted. >> reporter: the air traffic controllers union is applauding the deal. when controllers were forced to begin missing work this week without pay, it triggered thousands of delays. >> have a good flight. >> reporter: daniel trapp says lawmakers should have found a budget compromise months ago and never let it come to this. >> watching it happen is like a slow motion train wreck and it's silly. >> reporter: the white house says congress needs to address the billions of other automatic cuts impacting dozens of federal agencies. >> this is a band-aid covering a massive wound to the economy. >> reporter: the measure could also prevent the closure of smaller airport towers around

the country. danielle nottingham, cbs news, reagan national airport. nearly 12 years after 9/11 a piece of one of the hijacked planes has been found. surveyors spotted the boeing landing gear wedged between two buildings in lower manhattan. the nypd photographed that part as you see but it is not removed yet. apparently they are waiting on a decision on whether to sift the soil for possible human remains. one week after his capture, suspected boston marathon bomber johar tsarnaev has a new home. he has been transferred from a hospital in boston to a federal prison hospital 40 miles west. the boat where he was found hiding in watertown last friday was also moved to an undisclosed location today. meanwhile, the fbi is still searching a massachusetts landfill for tsarnaev's laptop and any other evidence that could link him to the attacks. it has been more than 20 years since the old embarcadero freeway in san francisco was torn down. but all these years later, some of the last pieces of that

structure are finally being ripped out of the ground. ken bastida is with mobile5 just outside of our studios where some highway history is coming out of the dirt. >> reporter: love this story, allen, because every once in a while if you pay attention, if you open your eyes, you can see a little bit of san francisco's history. we're right on the corner of sansom and broadway. let me show you over the fence. that pile of concrete is all that's left of the old embarcadero freeway. now, let's go back in time. let's show you a little bit of film here and say it's 1975. if you were coming down broadway, you would have entered the 1.2-mile embarcadero freeway right here on this on-ramp and that would have taken you all the way around back to the bay bridge. it was actually built, the embarcadero, to connect the golden gate bridge with the bay bridge. the golden gate side never got built as we all know. they stubbed it off. it was by some accounts an ugly

structure. and jim henry with cahill construction, who is doing this last bit of demolition, says, yeah, he remembers it. >> the bay bridge. >> reporter: yeah. >> reporter: yeah. >> it was a big green spot with all the green concrete. >> reporter: do think about it? >> it was ugly. >> reporter: so what's going in here in its place? they are going to build affordable housing and mixed retail. it's going to be about six stories tall. and it's going to be finished sometime in the summer of 2015. that's what's left. old freeway. we know what happened in 1989. its fate was decided in a few minutes. i'm ken bastida, kpix 5. it's exactly the kind of trend you don't want in your neighborhood. the bay area community seeing an explosion of burglaries and who police think is

struck a deal with the cityn pension reform they don't like it but the san jose police officers union has struck a deal with the city on pension reform. the deal applies only to new hires at san jose pd. officers would retire at age 60 instead of 50. they would collect 65% of their

salary instead of the current 95%. the union says the deal will make it harder to keep good cops. the city says it will be able to hire more officers. people in one bay area city are being warned to keep their doors locked and their windows shut. thieves hit more than 13 homes in hercules this month. don ford with the search for the suspects who know just when to strike. reporter: neighborhoods in hercules are normally quiet during this time of day. being a bedroom community, most folks are at work. and detective connie van putten says burglars have taken advantage of that. >> we have had a big spike in burglaries during april. we have had 12 versus the 2 we had last year at the same time. our biggest concern was we had five that were committed in one day. >> reporter: the crimes are in the same general area, too, on redwood street, partridge

street, lilac circle, goldenrod drive, and newbury street. police say crimes are low in this area. and folks often leave their garage doors open. but last monday, they got a break when a man saw four males jump over his neighbor's fence and called police. >> one of the males went on the roof in through the bedroom window. later all four men exited and jumped into a white honda odyssey. and the police spotted that car, chased it all the way into richmond. >> reporter: while the burglars got away, the mini crime wave has residents concerned. >> it's brave of people to try to rob the houses in daylight. >> it's scary because when you leave your hour, you don't know what you're going to come home to when you leave your house. >> reporter: after nearly being captured by the police here, authorities hoped that the team of burglars will think twice before coming back to hercules. in hercules, don ford, kpix 5. if it was even possible, buying products for your child

released in the u-s, but the made big samsung's latest smartphone has yet to be released here in the u.s., but the company has already made big gains on wall street. samsung reported its sixth consecutive quarter of profit growth today. it shipped nearly 71 million smartphones this quarter giving it a market share of 33% compared to its competitor, apple's 17%. apple plans to unveil new products this fall. pg&e is expanding its footprint in concord breaking ground today on a new electric distribution center. the project is going to bring about 250 construction jobs to concord and then 90 jobs at the center when it opens. a pg&e spokesman says the 37,000-square-foot center will incorporate smart grid technology that will enhance electric reliability. >> it's going to be a very big

building, it's going to act as the nerve center for the entire electric system for the bay area. >> hopefully your power doesn't go out. concord mayor dan helix and contra costa supervisor karen mitch off attended that groundbreaking ceremony. the center is expected to be completed next year. for years, many baby products have come with labels that say they meet the state's flammability standards. that may sound good. but as kpix 5 consumerwatch reporter julie watts explains, that's a label you may want to avoid. reporter: they may be plush and soft to the touch, but there could be something sinister lurking in your baby products. >> it's sort of incredible that the same chemical that was taken from kids' pajamas in the '70s is back in these products. >> reporter: this person was instrumental in getting chemical flame retardants banned from children's clothing more than 30 years ago after they were found to mutate dna and traces of the chemicals were found in children after wearing the clothes just one

night. >> these chemicals impact brain development and reproductive organ developments and some of them like tris are associated with increased risks of cancer. >> reporter: but decades later the chemicals are still in baby products, pretty much anything with foam thanks to california's flammability standard technical bulletin 117 which prompts manufacturers to use chemical flame retardants. >> one problem is the manufacturers are not required to say what flame retardants are being used. >> reporter: and not required to prove they are safe. there is a new market for chemical-free baby products. >> we are selective about which products we carry and just a few. >> reporter: boutique stores exclusively offer products like organic mattresses, breast- feeding pillows and the orbit carseat currently the only one on the market without chemical flame retardants but if you look closely you may think

you're breaking the law by buying some of these products. there are some products, for instance, breast-feeding pillows that come with a tag saying, it does not abide by california flammability standards. is that a good thing? >> well, i would choose those products. >> reporter: she points out the flammability standard is currently being rewritten to exclude both baby products but in the meantime if the product contains foam and the tag says it abides by california law, it's likely filled with flame retardants. >> if there is cotton, wool, polyester, it probably won't have t if it's foam it's hard to tell. >> reporter: the chemical industry says its products are safe and lobbying against the standard change that would reduce the flame retardants in your children's products. call us if you need help at 1- 888-5-helps-u. this just in. at least one person was killed in a multicar crash along highway 13 in oakland. it happened in the southbound lane a mile and a half from

redwood road in oakland. chp tells us the white suv crashed into the center divide there. you can see the accident. we don't know how many others wer hurt. we're working to get more information on the crash. 30 days into the all- electronic tolling on the golden gate bridge, those in charge say that it's been overall success, short of two issues. speeding is one. the limit through the plaza is 25. some drives are going up to60. the other issue cheaters in the carpool lane. drivers have been sneaking through. >> we have the eyes and the person and the button in the booth and now we don't have that. >> the chp plans to send more officers to crackdown on those drivers. fastrak use is way up from 69% last year to more than 81% today. well, if you want to head to the north bay or come into the city to spend a little time

47 degrees. for the next couple of days we'll still have the onshore flow. but high pressure is now moving back closer to us. it's happening right now. that will limit the onshore flow which means fewer clouds in the morning, more afternoon sunshine, and temperatures will climb about 2 to 3 degrees each day all the way through monday. then next week, perhaps too much of a good thing. high pressure will get so close to us, we are going to have high pressure building to the north and getting in the perfect spot not only to limit the onshore flow but to give us the opposite. the offshore wind. that's going to make us quite toasty toward the middle of next week with 90s inland by next wednesday. over the weekend morning clouds but not pushing inland. temperatures going up each day through the weekend top of next week even in san francisco, we're just talking about hot then cold. guess what, you're going to get hot again, 80s toward the middle of next week again in the city. tomorrow 72 for concord, san jose 73. low to mid-70s for palo alto

and santa clara, fremont. concord 72. upper 60s, low 70s for marin county, the peninsula and also for alameda county. as we get towards sunday, we are going to crank things up. next week we'll approach 90 inland by wednesday, low 80s near the bay. and even along the coastline here's another run for you with highs in the 70s wednesday through friday of next week. now, i just gave you a forecast but perhaps the more important forecast for sports fans is the forecast for steph curry's ankle. roberta gonzales? >> reporter: we are at the hottest place in town not temperature-wise but for fun and festivities the hottest place in town in the middle between o.co coliseum and oracle arena. this is the place to be tonight if you are a sports fan and coming out to one or the other game. so let's check the current conditions. it is 2 degrees, winds at 10 miles an hour with stronger
